Paving the Way 2022
Clara Schumann
In a partnership with the Wake Forest University Interdisciplinary Arts Center and the Departments of German and Women’s Gender, and Sexuality Studies, this first project centered around Clara Wieck Schumann, viewing her life and music from her own perspective. The series highlighted the historical, social, and musical aesthetics that influenced her life and career. It encouraged broader conversations concerning 18th and 19th-century Germanic culture and music.
Part 1 - Film
A free admission showing of “Song of Love” (1947), at a local indie film theater, focusing on the Historical & Cultural Exploration of Clara’s life. Following the film, attendees were able to join in a Q&A session with Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies scholar Wanda Balzano.
Part 2 - Lecture
A pre-concert lecture with scholar Megan Francisco, discussing the significance of Schumann’s life and music, her musical influences, and the impact she played on the future of music. This conversation included performance insight into her stylistic, form, harmonic, musical, and overall aesthetic choices.
Part 3 - Concert
Live performance by the Wake Forest University Symphony Orchestra, featuring renowned pianist Larry Weng on Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7. Schumann’s Piano Concert was bookended by Carl Maria von Weber’s Der Freischütz Overture and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67.
